Liam's Story
I was really pleased when I won a local radio competition for two tickets
to see a Reef concert. My parents
said it was OK for me to go, provided I took my sister, Shona, with me.
She's three years younger than I am
and my parents have always made me take her everywhere I go. It was all
right when we were kids but as I
got older and wanted to do different things, she began to embarrass me.
When I said I wanted to take my best friend Gavin and not Shona, Dad took
my side, but Mum was
annoyed and didn't agree. Of course, Shona was desperate to go and made
a big fuss about it, and Mum said
I ought to make more of an effort to be nice to her.
The day of the concert came and I was really excited. When Gavin and I were
ready to leave, Shona started
crying. I got annoyed with her, told her to go to the gym club and left
the house without saying goodbye.
After the concert we were so happy that we didn't notice how worried Gavin's
father was. He was waiting
to pick us up in his car. Then he told me that he had some bad news for
me. Apparently Shona had had an
accident crossing the road on her way to the gym club. She was in hospital
and her condition was pretty
serious.
I couldn't sleep that night -1 felt terrible. I just lay thinking about
Shona. I kept turning things over and
over in my mind -1 should have let her come with me to the concert and I
shouldn't have been so nasty to
her.
In the end Shona made a good recovery and came home three weeks later. Although
Mum and Dad say I
shouldn't blame myself and that it wasn't my fault, I still feel really
guilty.
